The Missing Peace Project

We are pleased to report that The Missing Peace: Artists Consider the Dalai Lama, jointly organized by the C100 and The Dalai Lama Foundation, had very successful 2006 exhibitions in Los Angeles (The Fowler Museum of UCLA) and Chicago (the Loyola University Museum of Art). The Missing Peace is currently being shown at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York (9 March – 4 September, 2007), and will be followed by the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco (opening 1 December, 2007). The exhibition will leave for Europe and Asia in spring 2008 and we are pursuing other venues through to 2011.

Thus far, each venue hosting The Missing Peace has tallied record attendance. In both LA and Chicago, the show garnered extremely positive and thoughtful reviews, including the title “Best Museum Exhibit of 2006” from the Ventura County Times in LA. The exhibition’s success is a testament to the compelling and thought-provoking nature of the art, made by 88 artists from 30 countries. The artists were challenged to create works in response to the Dalai Lama's universal messages as peacemaker and proponent of understanding and compassion in the midst of the turbulent 21st century world. We expect it to touch millions of people, call them to positive action and help raise the visibility of the Tibetan issue in a global humanitarian context.

The educational programs created by The Dalai Lama Foundation and The Missing Peace companion book have extended our reach into schools, libraries and homes. The website for The Missing Peace will provide you with a good introduction including a virtual tour of the exhibition as installed at the Fowler Museum. We hope you will be able to join us at an upcoming exhibition!

Tibetan Self-Determination Initiative

Following the 2004 conference in Switzerland, Shaping the Future of Tibet – Self-determination & Individual Activism, that was jointly organized by the C100 and the Tibetan Youth Association of Europe, and subsequent follow up meetings of the organizing committee, our Chair, Tenzin N. Tethong, has continued working within the Tibetan community and with Tibet support organizations to progress the initiative.

We have been monitoring the direct contacts between the representatives of the Dalai Lama and the Chinese Government that began in 2002. There have been five rounds of discussions with officials of the PRC, the last in February 2006 in China. These have been a valuable channel of communication between the two sides on the issues of genuine autonomy and a single administration for the Tibetan people, but did not produce any tangible results. With the continued support and encouragement of the U.S. Government, it is hoped that a 6th round will take place in 2007 that could involve a visit of the Dalai Lama to China.

Please visit the C100 website for further information about our Self-Determination Initiative including a White Paper on the reasons why support for self-determination for the Tibetan people is both just and reasonable.
